한국의 남동쪽에 있는 부산은 후기 구석기 시대부터 사람들이 거주했으며 철기 시대부터 교역의 중심지이었습니다. 부산의 대부분의 역사는 일본과의 관계에 의해 결정되었습니다. 일찍부터 부산에서 제련된 철이 바다 건너 그리고 한반도의 다른 지역으로 수출되었습니다. 부산이 15세기 초 공식적인 교역항으로 지정된 후 일본 상인의 부산 거주가 허용되었습니다. 일본의 욕심 많은 쇼군들을 물리치고자 요새도 건설되었으나, 1592년 도요토미 히데요시의 군의 침략을 물리치기에 역부족이었습니다.

The site of Busan in southeastern Korea has been settled since the late Paleolithic period and a center of trade since the Iron Age. Much of its history was shaped by its relationship with Japan. Early on, locally refined iron was exported across the sea as well as to other parts of the Korean Peninsula. Japanese merchants were allowed to live in Busan after it was designated an official trading port in the early fifteenth century. A fortress was also built to ward off greedy shoguns, but it failed to repel Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasion force in 1592 at the start of the Imjin War.

Busan became Korea’s first international port in 1876. It modernized rapidly and prospered under the Japanese occupation from 1910-1945. During the Korean War, it was one of only two cities not to fall under North Korean control. Therefore it became home to many refugees and served as the temporary wartime capital. Since its buildings did not sustain much damage, Busan retains a unique historic character. It is now the country’s chief port and second-largest city, and the surrounding region is South Korea’s foremost industrial area.
