센강 어귀의 '항구'를 의미하는 르아브르는 1517년에 세워졌습니다. 르아브르는 방벽과 성채에 둘러싸여 18세기 내내 번영했습니다. 그러나 영국과 인접한 환경 때문에 많은 군사 작전을 겪어야 했습니다. 7년 전쟁 때는 영국 침공을 위한 집결 지점이었습니다. 영국 침공은 왕립 해군이 연합 함대를 격퇴하면서 실패로 돌아갔습니다. 나폴레옹 전쟁 동안 르아브르는 다시 고통을 겪게 됩니다.

전쟁 후에는 빠르게 현대화되었고 곧 커피와 면직물을 전문으로 수입했습니다. 부유하고 호화로운 르아브르는 19세기 후반 파리 상류층에게 해안 휴양지로 인기를 끌었습니다. 2차 세계대전 동안에는 연합군의 폭격으로 도시 대부분이 파괴되었습니다. 피해는 완전히 복구되지 않았지만 파리의 주요 항구로서 어느 정도 위상을 회복했습니다.

Located at the mouth of the Seine River, Le Havre (literally ‘the harbor’) was founded in 1517. Protected by walls and a fortress, the town prospered through the 18th century. Le Havre saw its fair share of military action due to its proximity to England. In the Seven Years War, it was the staging point for an invasion of England which was foiled when the Royal Navy destroyed the assembled fleet. The city suffered again from British predations during the Napoleonic Wars.

After the wars, Le Havre modernized quickly and soon specialized in the import of coffee and cotton. In the second half of the 19th century, the wealthy and fashionable port became a popular seaside resort for the Parisian elite. Intense Allied bombing destroyed the vast majority of the city during World War II. It never fully recovered, but retains some importance as one of Paris’s main outlets to the sea.
