진승이 난을 일으켜 전역을 휩쓴 후
조나라 왕이 된 인물은 무신이였지만 무신이 부하인 이량의 반란으로 죽은 후
장이,
진여에 의해서 왕으로 옹립됐다. 명분을 얻고 조나라의 인심을 얻기 위한 방편이었던 걸로 보인다.
문제는 그후로 순탄치가 않았다는 것.
장한은 기세를 몰아서
한단을 점령한 후 파괴했고 조헐은 장이와 함께 거록성으로 몸을 피했다. 워낙 진나라 군대의 기세가 거겠기에 진여가 이끄는 5천의 지원군도 녹아버렸고 위기의 상황이었으나
거록대전에서 항우의 영웅적 활약으로 위기를 모면할 수 있었다. 문제는 이 때의 일로 장이와 진여가 앙숙이 돼버린 거였지만.
이후 항우의 분봉 조치로
대왕(代王)이 된다.
[1] 다만 이건 조헐이 직접 싸우지 않고 장이만 파견해서 싸우게 한 것도 있고, 항우가 옛 6국의 후예의 힘을 빼놓기 위해 머리를 쓴 것이라 기분이 좋지는 않았을 것이다.
수도는 대현(代縣). 즉 조나라 북부의 땅이며, 나머지는 상산왕이 된 장이의 봉토가 되었다.
진여가 항우에게 반기를 들고 봉기해 장이를 쫓아내자 조나라로 복귀했고, 진여는 조의 승상과 대왕을 아울러 맡았다.
한신이 처들어 올 때도 진여의 비중이 큰 걸로 보아 그의 영향력에 있었던 걸로 보이며
정형 전투에 패배하여 양국(襄國)에서 죽었다.
