George Washington pursued his passion for surveying as a young man until he was 20 years old in 1752, when he inherited the Mount Vernon estate from deceased relatives. Following his half-brother Lawrence, Washington pursued a military career, and was appointed the position of Commander tasked with overseeing a militia district. In 1754, Washington was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel at the start of the Seven Years' War, and his army successfully defended 300 miles of frontier from more than twenty enemy attacks in ten months.
The American Revolutionary War began on April 19th, 1775. The Continental Army was created two months later, and George Washington was unanimously elected to be the commander-in-chief by congress. For the next eight years, Washington's service as the commander-in-chief would help Americans seize independence from British rule. The first American presidential election was held from December 1788 to January 1789. George Washington won the presidency with overwhelming support, and was inaugurated on April 30th, 1789.
After eight years, or two full terms in office, Washington decided against running for a third term as the U.S. President. He did not want to die during a term in office, which could create the impression that the position of President would be a lifelong appointment. A farewell address was published to the American people and Washington retired from office in 1797. George Washington died on December 14th, 1799 at the age of 67. He was buried in the Washington family vault on the Mount Vernon estate he ran for over 40 years.
