밴드 R5의 공식적인 해체 이후, 2018년 3월 2일 로스 린치가 본인의 인스타그램 스토리를 통해 그와 로키 린치가 The Driver Era라는 새로운 밴드를 결성했음을 알렸다.[2]
투어를 할 때는 R5의 전 멤버들과도 무대를 함께하는 모습을 볼 수 있다.
밴드의 이름은 로스와 로키가 함께 차를 타고 이동하며 미래에 대한 대화를 나누던 중 우연히 'The driver era'라는 표현을 사용하면서 결정되었다고 한다.#
2018년 3월 16일 데뷔 싱글 <Preacher Man>을 발표하였고, 얼터너티브 록과 인디 음악계에서 높은 평가를 받았다.
2019년 6월 28일 데뷔 앨범 < X >가 발매되었다.
