한니발 바르카 (기원전 247년에서 183년~181년 사이)는 포에니 전쟁 기간동안 기원 전 2세기와 3세기 사이에 살았던 카르타고의 장군이었습니다. 한니발이라는 이름으로 알려진 그는 군 집안에서 태어났으며 카르타고의 최대의 적인 로마에 대해 영원한 증오를 맹세하게 되었습니다. 로마가 현재의 북아프리카의 튀니지아인 카르타고를 파괴한 이후 한니발 역사의 대부분은 로마인들에 의해서만 기록되어 있습니다. 로마인들은 보병, 기병, 전쟁 코끼리 부대를 단결시켜 전투를 승리로 이끈 한니발을 뛰어난 전략가이자 저술가로 묘사했습니다. 한니발이 로마인에게 공포를 심어 주었기 때문에, 재난이 일어날 때마다 로마인은 무서움에 떨며 '한니발이 문 앞에 왔다'라고 소리를 지르고는 했습니다.
한니발은 카르타고의 하밀카르 장군의 아들이었으며, 하밀카르 장군은 첫번째 포에니 전쟁에서 로마에 패배 당했습니다. 한니발은 당시 카르타고의 혼합된 민족으로 구성된 군대를 이끌던 자신의 매부인 공정한 하스드루발이 암살되면서 군의 지휘자가 되었습니다. 기원 전 219년에 한니발은 사군토를 손에 넣어 지중해를 장악하려는 계획을 세웠습니다. 로마인들의 눈에 사군토에 대한 공격은 전쟁으로 비쳐줬고, 두 번째 포에니 전쟁의 불을 지폈습니다.

자마 전투에서 스키피오 아프리카누스와 로마의 군은 결국 한니발을 격퇴하는데 성공했습니다. 로마인들은 트럼펫을 사용하여 한니발의 코끼리들이 아군의 병력을 짓밟도록 만들었습니다. 한니발의 군은 흩어졌고, 로마인들은 한니발의 병사를 하나씩 추적해 나갔습니다. 한니발의 군이 패배하자 로마는 카르타고와 그 군에 대해 무거운 제재를 내렸고, 카르타고 경제에 막대한 배상금을 부과했습니다.
전투에서 패배한 한니발은 정치에 입문해 최고 행정책임자로 선출되었습니다. 그는 군 재판관을 위한 법령을 제정하여, 재임 기간을 평생에서 2년으로 줄였습니다. 계속해서 로마의 추격을 받던 그는 결국 로마에 의해 잡히기 보다는 망명해 자살하는 길을 택했습니다. 망명 중에 사망했지만 한니발은 여전히 가장 훌륭한 군 지도자로 기억되고 있습니다.
Hannibal Barca (r. 247 - between 183 and 181 BCE) was a Carthaginian general who lived during the Punic Wars in the second and third centuries BCE. Mononymously known as Hannibal, he was born into a military family and made to swear eternal hatred for Rome, Carthage's greatest enemy. Since Rome destroyed Carthage, now the North African country of Tunisia, the majority of Hannibal's history is only recorded by the Romans. The Romans hailed Hannibal as a distinguished strategist and tactician who was able to victoriously wield an army of infantry, cavalry, and war elephants in unison. Hannibal struck such fear into the hearts of the Romans that whenever a disaster occurred, they would shriek 'Hannibal is at the gates!' in terror.
Hannibal was the son of Carthaginian General Hamilcar, who was defeated by Rome during the First Punic War. Hannibal became the leader of Carthage's mixed-ethnicity army when its former leader, his brother-in-law Hasdrubal the Fair, was assassinated. In 219 BCE, Hannibal enacted his plan to take control of the Mediterranean by capturing Saguntum. The attack on Saguntum was seen as an act of war in the eyes of the Romans and ignited the Second Punic War.
Hannibal continued to be victorious in battles during the Second Punic War, including the Battle of Trebia, the Battle of Lake Trasimene, and the Battle of Cannae. Hannibal's tactical prowess was in full effect during the Battle of Cannae when he utilized the double envelopment military maneuver by attacking both sides of the Roman formation that had been attacking Hannibal's forces directly.
Due to Rome's many defeats at the hands of Hannibal, Rome changed its military strategy to only attack Hannibal using attrition since Rome had the advantage of more supplies and soldiers. Finally taking the fight toward Rome, Hannibal led his army and numerous elephants across the snowy Alps while fighting battles along the way. However, his plan to overtake the Mediterranean would not come to fruition.
At the Battle of Zama, Scipio Africanus and Rome's forces finally succeeded in defeating Hannibal. The Romans used trumpets that caused Hannibal's elephants to stampede and trample his own troops. Hannibal's military forces became scattered, resulting in the Romans hunting down his soldiers one by one. After the defeat of Hannibal's forces, Rome authorized heavy sanctions against Carthage and its military while imposing large reparations against Carthage's economy.
Now defeated in battle, Hannibal went into politics and was elected chief magistrate. He conscripted legislation for military judges and reduced the terms for office from life to two years. Still sought after by Rome, he would eventually enter exile and take his own life rather than be captured by the Romans. Although he died in exile, Hannibal is still remembered as one of the greatest military minds of all time.
