보위의 Space Oddity 활동기간 투어로, 마임 등의 복합적 예술공연이 동반된 소규모 투어였다.
존 허친슨(일명 "허치", 기타리스트), 당시의 여자친구인 헤르미온느 파팅게일이 함께한 밴드 구조로 진행되었다.

Space Oddity의 유명세 때문에 1일차 헤드라이너로 섭외되었으나, 당시엔 글라스톤베리가 그리 영향력있는 공연이 아니라서 주민들의 항의에 의해 이튿날 아침으로 공연시간이 옮겨졌다. 공연당시는 The Man Who Sold the World까지만 발매된 상태였고 Hunky Dory를 레코딩 중이었다. 즉 Hunky Dory 곡들은 저 무대에서 최초로 공개된 셈. 이후 보위는 30년만에 초대형 페스티벌이 된 글라스톤베리의 헤드라이너로 금의환향한다. 하단의 Glastonbury 2000 참조.

보위를 상징하는 '지기 스타더스트' 페르소나 시절의 퍼포먼스들.
1972년부터 1973년까지 지기 스타더스트&알라딘 세인 기반으로 영국, 서유럽 일부, 미국, 일본에서 열렸으며 스파이더 프롬 마스 밴드(기타 믹 론슨 / 베이스 트레버 볼더 / 드럼 믹 우드맨시 + 피아노 마이크 가슨, 프로듀서 케네스 스콧) 와 함께 진행되었다.
페르소나라곤 하지만 무대 위에서 지기 스타더스트의 내러티브나 스토리를 사용하여 멘트를 한 것은 아니며, 그 당시 락 뮤지션들이 집중하지 않았던 시각적 요소나 퍼포먼스들에 새로운 의미를 부여한 공연으로서 볼 수 있다. 당장 위 <Time> 영상에서 1절 끝부분의 믹 론슨과 보위의 엄한짓하는 코스프레(...) 같은 것들이 예시.

1973년 7월 3일을 기점으로 보위는 영구히 지기 스타더스트 페르소나를 버렸으며, 두 번 다시 무대 위에서 지기 스타더스트를 연기하지 않았다.

  당시 기준으로는 선공개곡이다.

독일식 표현주의의 영향을 받은 무대 디자인, 아직 꺼지지 않은 글램 록 풍의 보위, 멸망 직전의 도시 등 새로운 연극적인 설정과 활동들이 흥행을 이끌어준 투어. Diamond Dogs 앨범 / Halloween Jack 페르소나 기반의 투어이다.
기존 Ziggy Stardust / Aladdin Sane 시절의 곡들은 조금 더 어반 풍으로 편곡을 고쳤으며, 잠재적으로 지기 시절의 마지막 공연을 라이브앨범으로서 발매할 논의 때문인지 지기 마지막 공연에서 선곡되지 않았던 곡들을 꽤 들을 수 있다.
투어 중간중간에 휴식기가 있어 두 파트로 나눌 수 있으며, 두 번째 파트의 미국 공연들과 미국 거주 경험에서 보위는 서서히 소울의 영향을 받는다. It's Gonna Be Me 같은 곡이 투어 직전 탄생해 투어에 소울 분위기를 더했다.
첫 번째 파트는 David Live, 두 번째 파트는 Cracked Actor (사후 발매) 라는 이름으로 라이브반이 존재한다.

Diamond Dogs 투어의 3번째 파트로, Young Americans 앨범의 곡이 Fascination을 제외하고 거의 다 완성된 상태에서 진행된 투어다. (Fame은 이 당시 전혀 고려중이지 않은 곡이었음을 감안하자면)
보위는 아예 대놓고 소울 영향을 드러내며 색소포니아 데이비드 샌본을 밴드에 영입한다. 메시지는 여전히 강하나 편곡도 상당히 흑인음악적으로 변했으며 디스토션 사운드 없이 부드러워졌다. 심지어 소울 클래식에 해당하는 곡들을 몇 곡 커버하기도 했다.
여전히 페르소나 상으로는 Halloween Jack이었으나 날이 선 사운드나 복장 등이 사라지며 기존의 투어들과 상당히 동떨어진 투어가 되었으며, 앞으로의 "보위 스타일" 에 대한 변화가 예고되었다.
모던 재즈 스타일의 사운드를 구사하던 마이크 가슨과는 이 공연 이후 결별하게 되는데, 보위가 정통적이지 않은 악기와 장르로 이루어진 실험적, 특히 신스 사운드를 추구하기 시작하면서 피아노를 공부한 마이크 가슨이 할 일이 없어지게 되었기 때문이다.
셋리스트 역시 이 투어를 마지막으로 Diamond Dogs 곡들과, 심지어는 발매조차 되지 않았던 Young Americans 곡들도 상당수가 강판되어 버렸다(...) 1984, Win, Rock & Roll w/ Me, Can u Hear Me, It's Gonna Be Me, Somebody Up There Likes Me, Future Legend는 이 투어에서의 마지막 라이브(12.1.1974)가 보위 평생의 마지막 라이브였다.

때문에 보위의 활동 기간을 특정 기준으로 나눌 때(음반 상으로는 베를린 3부작의 의미 때문에 여기서 나누지 않지만), 지기 - 다이아몬드 독스 - 소울 투어 - Young Americans 중후반 세션까지를 하나의 파트로 본다.

짐작했겠지만 정작 이후 Young Americans의 단독 투어는 존재하지 않는데, 보위가 지구에 떨어진 사나이라는 영화의 주연 배우를 맡게 되었으며, 매니저와의 갈등, 업계에 대한 염증 등으로 보위가 음악계에서 은퇴할 것을 선언하는 등 여러모로 보위 개인에게 있어 힘든 시절이 시작되었기 때문이다.

영화 촬영 도중 접한 코카인에 중독되고, 일상생활에서 극도의 불안과 혼란을 느끼던 보위는 거의 맛이 간 상태에서 크라우트록과 일렉트로닉에 대한 관심을 풀 생각으로 Station to Station을 만들었다. 직후 자신이 연기한 "지구로 떨어진 사나이" 의 OST를 만들 것을 제안받았으나, 사실은 자신이 일관되게 만드는 것이 아니라 고작 트랙 몇 개를 만든다는 것을 알고 자아가 길길이 찢긴 기분이라며 분노하고 작업에 참여하지 않을 것을 선언하게 된다. 분노와 번아웃, 마약 중독으로부터 떠나는 임시방편으로 유럽으로 도망치기 위해 보위는 투어를 계획한다.
투어의 이름 Isolar는 "고립되어있다" 는 isolation으로부터 나온 보위의 창작 단어로서 보위가 이 투어 시점에 어떤 상태였는지를 여실히 나타내주고 있다(...)
독일식 표현주의의 영향을 받아 오프닝에서부터 구성을 독특하게 잡았는데, 크라프트베르크의 Radioactivity를 오프닝 음악으로 나오게 한 후 살바도르 달리의 안달루시안의 개의 장면 일부(칼날이 눈알을 부수는 장면)를 재생해주고, Station to Station의 사운드와 함께 보위가 등장하는 구성을 취했다. 무대 연출 역시도 온갖 배경들이 등장하였다.

음악 내적으로는 셋리스트가 싹 갈려 보위의 새로운 스타일을 슬슬 보여주고 있다. Diamond Dogs + Young Americans 시절 곡은 타이틀곡, 싱글트랙을 제외하고 전멸했으며, Moonage Daydream과 Aladdin Sane은 아주 오랫동안 셋리스트에서 사라진다. 또한, 인트로 아웃트로 등의 음향효과에서만 사용되던 신디사이저 사용이 많아지기 시작하였다.
그 외로는 Panic in Detroit에서 드러머 데니스 데이비스가 친 긴 솔로가 훌륭하다. 들어보기


보위의 사실상 마지막 페르소나인 띤 화이트 듀크를 유일하게 선보인 투어이자 그가 70년대에 좋아하던 표현주의를 극대화한 멋진 공연이지만, 우선 공식적인 영상이 없고, 중간에 보위와 이기 팝이 마약 중독으로 경찰서에 잡혀간다거나, 영국은 파시즘의 영향을 받아야 된다는 등의 인터뷰로 온갖 웃음거리와 비난거리를 만들어 낸 투어이기도 하다. 몇 곡 하지도 않고 다급하게 끝나버린 투어 직후 보위는 베를린으로 향하여 본격적인 휴양과 베를린 3부작의 작업을 시작한다(...)

베를린 3부작 테마 투어. 다만 Lodger는 아직 곡들의 스케치 정도만 완료된 상태였기 포함되지 않았다.
베를린 3부작의 상징 같은 브라이언 이노도 신스 세션으로 참여를 계획했으나 개인 레코딩으로 인해 이루지 못했으며, 대신 챔버 앙상블 세션이 포함되어 현대음악 삘이 나는 퍼포먼스를 펼쳤다.

2부에서는 지기 스타더스트 시절의 모든 곡을 공연할 계획이었으나, 중간 4곡 정도가 러닝타임 상 리허설 외에는 공연되지 않았다.
(즉 중간 4곡을 제외한 모든 곡은 1978년 Isolar 2 투어의 라이브가 존재한다) 이 시기 페르소나가 아예 없었던 만큼, 기존의 "페르소나틱하고" "스타성 짙은" 자신과의 일시적 이별을 꿈꾼 것으로 생각된다.
도쿄 NHK홀에서 공연한 이 투어의 라이브 풀영상이 있다. 이 소제목 상단에 올라와있는 것이 그것.

투어를 예고하고 방송 홍보 등도 활발하게 했으나, 존 레논의 암살로 인해 불투명해졌던 상황에서,
마크 채프먼이 보위의 《엘리펀트 맨》뮤지컬 공연을 여러 번 관람했으며 보위 자신도 타깃 중 하나였다는 것을 알고는 엄청난 공포와 함께 모든 공연 연습을 취소하고 집으로 은둔하였다.
