안톤 가르시아 아브릴은 유럽 공인 건축가이자 매사추세츠 주 연방 인증 건축사다. 그는 1996년에는 로마에서 스페인 아카데미 연구상을 수상했으며 2000년에 앙상블 스튜디오 (Ensamble Studio)를 설립하고 2020년에는 디자인/건축회사 WoHo를 공동 창립했다.
2. 생애[편집]
1969년 마드리드에서 태어난 안톤 가르시아 아브릴은 마드리드 공과대학교(Universidad Politechnica de Madrid)에서 1996년 유럽 박사 학위를 취득했다. 그는 2012년부터 매사추세츠 공과대학교(MIT) 건축 및 도시계획대학의 정교수를 역임하며, 같은 해 아내이자 하버드 디자인대학원(Graduate School of Design)에서 건축 및 디자인 비평가로 활동 중인 데보라 메사 (Débora Mesa, 1981~)와 POPlab(Prototypes of Prefabrication Laboratory)를 공동 창립했다.
그는 세계적으로 인정받는 작업들을 통해 건축 및 건설 분야의 발전을 위한 기술, 분류 체계 및 방법론 등을 혁신하기 위해 헌신해 왔다. 그는 데보라와 함께 디자인/설계 등 기존 건축가의 역할에 개발, 건설, 조립 및 발명 등의 역량을 더하며 건축가의 역할을 새롭게 정의해 왔다.

앙상블 스튜디오는 2000년에 설립된 다기능 팀(cross-functional team)으로, 건축가 안톤 가르시아 아브릴과 데보라 메사가 이끌고 있다. 상상력과 현실, 미술과 과학의 균형 있는 조화를 추구하는 그들의 작업은 조경 시공부터 주택 조립에 이르기까지 다양한 문제에 대한 혁신적인 유형, 기술 및 방법론을 제시한다.
초기 작품인 SGAE 본부(Sociedad General de Autores y Editores headquarters), 해가 지는 집(Hemeroscopium House), 더 트러플(The Truffle)서부터 최근 작품인 마드리드의 Ensamble Fabrica, 스페인의 메노르카에 위치한 땅의 집(Ca'n Terra)까지, 모든 프로젝트에는 건축 분야의 발전을 목표로 하는 실험적 요소가 담겨있다.
현재 스타트업 단계인 WoHo를 통해 그들은 외부 생산기술(Off-site technologies)을 적용하며 건축 분야의 품질과 경제성을 높이는 방법을 개발하고 있다. 마드리드의 Ensamble Fabrica 역시 이러한 시도를 위해 새롭게 지어진 연구 조립 시설이다.

안톤 가르시아-아브릴은 2008년 코넬 대학교, 2010년 하버드 대학교 대학원 건축 학교, 2011년 MIT 등에서 객원 교수로 활동한 경험 있으며, 그의 강연과 강의는 세계적으로 전파되기도 했다. 최근에는 독일의 슈투트가르트 주립 미술 아카데미, 쿤스트아카데미 뒤셀도르프, 영국 건축협회 건축학교, 시카고 문화센터, 건축비엔포럼, 샌 안토니오 텍사스 대학교, 바이마르 바우하우스 대학교, 취리히 연방 공과대학교, 프린스턴 대학교, 중국 하얼빈공업대학교, 남아프리카 공화국 요하네스버그 ZA 2010 의회, 스위스 멘드리지오 건축학교, 키토의 에콰도르 건축 대학교 등에서 강의 활동을 펼쳤다.
또한 그는 15년 동안 El Mundo 신문의 El Cultural 매거진에서 건축 평론가로 활동했으며, 2009년 BBVA 재단 지식 프론티어 상 (스티븐 홀에서 수여) 및 2013년 미스반데어로에 상 (바르셀로나에서 수여) 등의 심사위원으로 참여한 경력이 있다. 최근에는 국제적인 건축 분야에서의 공로로 “영국 왕립 건축가 협회 (RIBA) 국제 펠로우”로 선정되었다. 앙상블 스튜디오는 2005년 'Architectural Record'가 선정하는 '차세대 세계 건축을 리드할 10인의 건축가상', 2008년 'AD 상', 2009년 '라이스 디자인 얼라이언스 상' 등을 수상한 바 있으며, 2012년에는 FAD 건축가 상을 수상했다.
2009년 안톤 가르시아-아브릴은 도시 현상에 대한 연구를 수행하기 위해 Positive City Foundation을 설립했다. 2010년에는 2010년 카즈요 세지마 (Kazuyo Sejima)에 의해 제12회 베니스 비엔날레 국제 건축전에 참여하도록 선정되었으며, 2012년에는 아내와 함께 '스페인랩'을 선보이며 13회 베니스 비엔날레의 스페인 국립관 큐레이터로 활동하였다.
