앨범 발매 전 [[롤링 스톤]]과 진행한 인터뷰에서 [[GAYLE]]은 이번 앨범에 대해 자신의 성장통은 담은 앨범이라고 밝혔다.

앨범은 시리즈 형태로 발매되었으며, 첫 번째 파트가 이 앨범이고, 두 번째 파트인 [[a study of the human experience volume two|Volume two]]는 [[2022년]] [[10월 7일]]에 발매되었다.

== 발매 과정 ==
[[2021년]] [[8월 13일]], 앨범의 리드 싱글이자 메이저 데뷔 싱글인 [[abcdefu]]를 발매했다. 발매 초기 [[틱톡]]에서 바이럴되다 [[2022년]] [[1월]] 시점에서 역주행에 성공한다. [[빌보드 핫 100]] 4위, [[Official Charts]] 1위를 달성하였다.

[[2022년]] [[1월 19일]], 리드 싱글의 흥행에 기세를 몰아 두번째 싱글인 [[ur just horny]]를 발매했다. 리드 싱글이 한창 흥행하고 있을 시점에 발매된 탓인지 리드 싱글에 비해 별다른 성과 없이 활동이 마무리되었다.

[[2월 23일]], [[롤링 스톤]]과의 인터뷰를 통해 앨범명과 앨범 발매일을 공개하였다. 앞서 서술한 싱글을 포함해 6곡이 수록될 예정.

성적에 대한 반응은 긍정적인 편보다 부정적인 편이 대체로 많은 편이다. [[빌보드 200]]에서 138위로 차트인 하여 2주 밖에 차트인 하지 못한 것이 주 원인.

긍정적인 편의 입장에서는 해당 앨범은 실물 발매 형태가 아닌 디지털 스트리밍 형태의 [[EP]]앨범이고, [[애틀랜틱 레코드|레이블]]에서는 앨범의 별다른 프로모션 또한 지원해주지 않은 데다가 [[GAYLE|게일]]은 무려 신인 아티스트인데 이 정도 성적이면 선방한 것이 아니냐는 의견을 제시하는 한 편, 부정적인 편의 입장에서는 빌보드 앨범차트가 개별 싱글 트랙들의 음원과 스트리밍을 합산해서 발표하기 때문에, 10위권 이내가 아닌 이상 딱히 의미가 없다는 의견이 대다수이다.[* 특히 리드 싱글인 [[abcdefu]]가 이미 [[빌보드 핫 100]] 상위권에 차트인해 있었기 때문에, 해당 싱글의 성적을 빼면 앨범차트 순위는 더 낮았을 것이라고 의견을 덧붙이고 있다.]

결과를 따져 보면 위에서 언급한 별다른 홍보(프로모션)이 없었다고 하지만 앨범 홍보에 있어 가장 중요하다고 평가받는 싱글들, 특히 [[빌보드 핫 100]] 상위권을 차지하고 있었던 [[abcdefu]]의 주목도가 높았던 점을 감안하면 안타까운 성적인 것은 맞다. 디지털 스트리밍 형태로만 앨범이 발매되었다고는 하지만 이러한 형식으로 발매되는 앨범들이 많아지고 있는 추세인 것도 사실이기에 딱히 위안 삼을 거리가 되지 않으며, [[GAYLE|게일]]처럼 [[틱톡]]으로 이름을 알리고 있는 아티스트들이 싱글만 흥행하고 앨범이 히트하지 못하는 비슷한 루트를 타는 사례도 많아지고 있다. 따라서 [[GAYLE|게일]]은 앞으로 이름을 더 알릴 수 있는 히트곡을 발매하는 것이 중요해 보인다.
