With more than 18,000 bunkers of reinforced concrete, the Siegfried Line would require a tank with a massive gun to punch holes through those bunkers, with the ability to take a counterpunch in the bargain – or so the planners thought.

>The result was the 100-ton leviathan known as the T28 Super Heavy Tank. The 105mm gun was so large that the designers did away with the turret; the barrel was built into the front of the tank with very little ability to aim without moving the entire tank. Virtually anything the tank was able to hit would be obliterated in one shot. Its armor – in places, 12 inches thick – could even stop the feared 88mm guns mounted on the best of the German tanks during the war.
