It reached the apex of its influence in the 14th century as the ‘Queen’ of the Hanseatic League, a federation of merchant cities and guilds that controlled trade throughout the region. The League had offices as far west as England and Flanders, as far north as Norway, and as far east as Russia.

Copper and iron came from Sweden, whale oil from Norway, and fish from all along the coasts. Today a great deal of the medieval city of Lübeck is preserved, despite Allied bombing in World War II.
