>두브로브니크의 크로아티아인들은 근처의 그리스 피난민들이 라구사 섬에 세운 정착지와 오랜 연을 갖고 있습니다. 결국 두브로브니크를 중심으로 작은 군도들은 연합 되었습니다. 라구사 공화국은 비잔틴, 베네치아, 헝가리의 통제 하에 들어간 적도 있지만 외교와 상업 수완 덕분에 어느 정도 독립을 유지할 수 있었습니다. 16세기 전성기에 라구사의 배들은 전 세계와 교역을 하고, 베니스의 상인들과 경쟁했으며, 오스만 제국은 라구사 공화국의 값진 서비스를 대가로 이 작은 공화국을 보호해 주었습니다.

>하지만, 1667년 지진으로 황폐화되면서 라구사는 이미 쇠락의 길을 걷기 시작했습니다. 약해진 라구사 공화국은 1806년 나폴레옹이 점령하며 폐지되었으며, 비엔나 회의에서 오스트리아-헝가리로 넘어갔으며, 1차 세계대전 후에는 유고슬라비아에 흡수되었습니다. 지금은 크로아티아의 명칭인 두브로브니크로 알려진 이 곳은 아름다운 중세의 성벽으로 유네스코 세계 유산으로 등재된 유명한 관광지가 되었습니다. 이 비무장 마을은 유고슬라비아 전쟁 기간 동안 무차별 폭격을 받았으나 이후 놀라울 정도로 회복했습니다.

Ragusan ships traded all over the world during its sixteenth-century heyday and competed with the merchant fleets of Venice, a valuable service which the Ottoman sultans repaid by protecting the tiny state.

The weakened republic was abolished by Napoleonic occupiers in 1806, handed to Austria-Hungary at the Congress of Vienna, and lumped into Yugoslavia after World War I. Now known by its Croatian name, Dubrovnik has become a famous tourist destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its picturesque medieval walls. The demilitarized town was senselessly shelled during the Yugoslav Wars but has since made a remarkable recovery.
